Abordé du point de vue d'une sociologie de la connaissance, le développement culturel renvoie au problème d'une théorie des idéologies, définie non plus comme une théorie du discours ou des idéologies politiques, mais comme théorie de la connaissance. Dissociant l'idéologique du politique et posant l'idéologie comme mode de connaissance, analogue à la connaissance scientifique, dont les fondements sont ceux du travail scientifique, comme de la pensée de sens commun (comme niveaux spécifiques d'abstraction), l'analyse d'une histoire de vie tente de vérifier cette distinction théorique. Dans la perspective d'une sémantique structurale, l'analyse de contenu qui est faite, tente moins de décrire et d'expliquer la «mécanique» du texte, que de démontrer qu'on peut y trouver un objet construit, la société québécoise, définissant un modèle concret de connaissance analogue au modèle abstrait que construit le scientifique. Ce modèle concret, expression et outil d'explication de cette réalité, est relatif à l'état de développement de cette société. Il permet aussi de jeter un regard nouveau sur l'histoire du Québec du point de vue de la genèse des rapports sociaux constitutifs de cette société et de la connaissance qu'il est possible d'en avoir: définissant ainsi l'objet même d'une sociologie de la connaissance. Looked at from the point of view of the sociology of knowledge, cultural development relates back to the problem of the theory of ideologies, defined not as a theory of discourse or of political ideologies but as a theory of knowledge. An attempt is made to verify this theoretical distinction through the analysis of a life history, by disassociating the ideological from the political and by presenting ideology as a mode of knowledge similar to scientific knowledge with its foundations in scientific endeavor as well as in common sense thought (as specific levels of abstraction). A content analysis is made in the perspective of structural semantics, less in an attempt to describe and explain the 'mechanics' of the text than to demonstrate that a constructed object, in this case Quebec society, can be found in it, thereby defining a concrete model of knowledge similar to the abstract model constructed by the scientist. This concrete model, as expression and instrument of explication of this reality, relates to the state of development of this society. It also makes it possible to take a new look at the history of Quebec from the point of view of the genesis of social relationships which make up this society and the knowledge that may be had of them, thus defining the object of a sociology of knowledge itself. Abordada desde el punto de vista de una sociología del conocimiento, el desarrollo cutural refiere al problema de una teoría de las ideologías ya no definida como una teoría del discurso o de las ideologías políticas sino como teoría del conocimiento. El análisis de una historia de vida trata de verificar esta distinctión teórica, disociando la ideología de lo político y considerándola como una forma de conocimiento similar al conocimiento científico, cuyos fundamentos son los del trabajo científico y también los del pensamiento del sentido común (niveles específicos de abstracción). Siguiendo la perspectiva de una semántica estructural, él análisis de contenido, realizado, trata no tanto describir y explicar la « mecánica » del texto que demostrar que se puede encontrar en él un objeto construido, la sociedad quebequense. Está define un modelo concreto de conocimiento, similar al modelo abstracto construido por el científico. Ese modelo concreto, expresión e instrumento de esta realidad, depende del estado de desarrollo de esta sociedad. Nos permite, también de tomar una nueva visión de la historia de Quebec desde el punto de vista de la génesis de las relaciones sociales que constituyen esta sociedad y del conocimiento que es posible tener: definiendo de esta manera el objeto mismo de una sociología del conocimiento.

This collection of readings on the concept of ideology is brought together by the Marxist critic, Terry Eagleton. His introduction traces the historical evolution of ideology and examines in a more theoretical style the various meanings of the word and their significance. The readings begin with the first English translations of some of the writing of the French founder of the concept in the eighteenth century. They then move from the enlightenment to Hegel and Marxism, with particular emphasis on Marx and Engels themselves. They also look at other eighteenth-century traditions of thought such as Nietzche and Freud.
